Portrait of a Wine Ambassador: Emiliano Stratico

Emiliano Stratico, now a wine educator at WiSP, has followed a remarkable path blending international exploration, cultural expertise, and a passion for wine. With a degree in Tourism, Emiliano began his career in the hospitality industry, working in both Argentina and France. His journey took a global turn when he became a consultant for the Argentinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, undertaking missions around the world—from China to Vietnam, Mexico, and Nigeria. 

This role, focused on the commercial and touristic promotion of Argentina, highlighting the country’s treasures, particularly its wines and wine tourism routes, was a turning point for Emiliano. Fascinated by wine and its subtleties, he chose to deepen his knowledge and began his training with WSET certifications in London. Emiliano has kindly agreed to answer our questions. 

Why did you choose wine and the profession of educator?

“I’ve always been driven by the desire to share knowledge. I started teaching in tourism and gastronomy schools in Argentina, an experience that led me to further enhance my pedagogical skills. I completed a Master’s degree in pedagogy to better design short courses with specific objectives—essentially, instructional design. I am also a certified Valpolicella educator.”

What courses do you teach at WiSP, and what are your contributions?

“I deliver WSET Level 2 and 3 wine courses in both English and French. I also teach the Latin American wine regions module of the Diploma (WSET Level 4). Additionally, I am certified to teach the French Wine Scholar program (Wine Scholar Guild). My expertise lies in bridging cultural and technical aspects of wine, and I enjoy simplifying complex concepts to make learning more accessible.” 

In your opinion, what are the main benefits of WSET certifications?

“The WSET certifications are invaluable. They provide candidates with analytical skills as they progress through the levels. These courses help develop a deep understanding of wine styles and quality without requiring memorization of all appellations. This cross-functional expertise is directly applicable in various sectors, such as hospitality, import-export, and wine retail management. More than just knowledge accumulation, WSET certifications equip professionals to address modern industry challenges.” 

Have you noticed pedagogical shifts in wine education?

“Absolutely. Today’s training programs do more than just convey information; they aim to foster critical thinking in learners. The focus is on key grape varieties and appellations relevant to the global wine market, while also teaching participants to reason, analyze, and contextualize the issues facing the wine industry. This adaptive approach aligns with the demands of a constantly evolving sector.” 

You’ve traveled extensively. Can you share a memorable experience?

Indeed, I am a passionate traveler. Two experiences stand out: 

• Ribera del Duero and Rioja: In these regions, I observed the impact of continentality and thermal amplitude on Tempranillo, a flagship grape. I came to understand why wines from Ribera have such distinct characteristics, with thicker-skinned grapes and marked acidity. 

• Chile’s Central Valley: Driving through this valley to the Pacific Ocean, I was struck by a 15°C temperature drop in just two hours. This perfectly illustrates the diversity of wine styles produced in Chile, from robust reds to elegant whites.
