Italian Wine Scholar™ - Prep Course

The only course in the industry to discover Italian wines!

Botanical cradle of thousands of grape varieties such as sangiovese, nebbiolo, barbera, dolcetto, cortese, aglianico, negroamaro… Italy is a vibrant wine country with great wine culture.

You will explore the red, white and sparkling wines of the three main Italian regions: Northern Italy, Central Italy and Southern Italy. You will learn about viticulture, vinification, wine style, and food and wine pairing for each appellation—an easy-to-understand map of Italian wine regions and major wine varieties will guide you.

This course is an excellent introduction to the Italian Wine Scholarqualification.

HOW WILL MY COURSE BE CONDUCTED ?

Here are the different stages of the italian Wine Scholar™ -Prep Course, from course registration to certificate validation.

I validate my registration with me support of the WiSP team.

Seven days after my enrolment validation, I will receive access codes to the course online plateform.

Fifteen days before the course start date, an e-email will provide me with all the necessary information to assist to the in-class session at the WiSP Bordeaux campus.

On D-Day, I attend my in-class session at WiSP Bordeaux to discover all the italian wine regions and taste the corresponding wines.

The exam is optional and takes place at the end of the training day (50 MCQs).

12 weeks after the exam, I will receive my results by e-mail. If I successfully pass my exam, I will receive my italian Wine Scholar™ - prep Course certificate by post.

Industry professionals who wish to gain a better understanding of Italian wines

Advanced industry professionals who wish to specialise in Italian wines.

Although it is not a mandatory prerequisite, it is easier to embark on a Wine Scholar course when you have already obtained the WSET® Level 2 Award in Wines.

What will you learn in this Italian Wine Scholar™ - Prep Course?

Describe the key factors that influence the climate of each appellation (the influence of rivers, lakes, seas, valleys, mountains, winds).

Recall the main grape varieties associated with each wine discussed in the session.

Identify the location of the appellations presented on a map of Italy.

Recall the winemaking and ageing techniques that contribute to the style of the wines.

Describe the meaning of key labelling terms.

Describe the style of each of the wines covered in the session.

Italian Wine Scholar™ - Prep Course Syllabus

The course material for the Italian Wine Scholar™ - Prep Course is broken down into three modules:

  • Sparkling Wines: Prosecco DOC and Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG, Trento DOC, Franciacorta DOCG, Lambrusco DOC, Asti DOCG and Moscato d’Asti DOCG.
  • White Wines: Gavi DOCG, Roero Arneis DOCG, Lugana DOC, Soave DOC and Soave Superiore DOCG, Alto Adige DOC, Collio DOC and Friuli Colli Orientali DOC.
  • Red Wines: Dolcetto d’Alba DOC, Barebera d’Asti DOCG, Barolo DOCG and Barbaresco DOCG, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG.

  • White Wines: Vernaccia di San Gimignago DOCG, Orvieto DOC, Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC, Vin Santo DOC.
  • Red Wines: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC, Chianti Classico DOCG, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Bolgheri DOC, Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG.

  • White Wines: Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, Fiano di Avellino DOCG, Greco di Tufo DOCG, Passito di Pantelleria DOCG, Marsal DOC.
  • Red Wines: Cannonau di Sardegna DOC, Sicilia Nero d’Avola DOC, Etna DOC, Primitivo di Manduria DOC, Taurasi DOCG.
