You’ve been brewing for years. You speak confidently about Mosaic hops, dry hopping, or mixed fermentation. Maybe you’re a brewer, a zythologist, or a specialist beer retailer. In short, beer holds few secrets for you… or so it seems.
Because mastering the art of beer isn’t just about creating or serving it in a bar: it’s about tasting with precision, building a structured vocabulary, understanding international styles, and mastering production processes on a global scale. And that’s exactly what the WSET Level 2 Award in Beer offers.
But why study beer if I already know it well ?
Because mastering a craft doesn’t always mean you can structure your knowledge or communicate in a shared professional language.
Because hands-on expertise can sometimes hit its limits when facing the complexity of global styles, the diversity of fermentation techniques, or a blind tasting.
And above all, because a brewer, zythologist, or beer professional gains in impact—whether training, creating, or selling—by using a shared, internationally recognized language.
Even if you’re already working as a brewer, zythologist, or in another role within the beer industry, continuous training isn’t redundant—it’s essential. The brewing world never stops evolving. New styles keep emerging, techniques diversify, and consumer expectations become more complex: traceability, sustainability, taste, food and beer pairing… not to mention the rise of alcohol-free beers. In this context, staying curious, refining your knowledge, and learning how to keep learning is a skill in itself.
Being able to describe a beer precisely, assess its quality objectively, and convey a sensory or technical experience clearly is a true lever for credibility and differentiation. Whether you work in a brewery, retail, hospitality, or distribution, speaking the same language as professionals worldwide also means selling better, training better… and innovating better.
And let’s not forget: consumers themselves are becoming increasingly knowledgeable. They ask the right questions and want to understand products in detail. Being able to answer them with rigor, pedagogy, and passion is a real asset.
Training when you’re already in the trade isn’t about starting from scratch. It’s about sharpening your tools, structuring your expertise, and gaining a head start.
What Will the WSET Level 2 Award in Beer Actually Give Me ?
This qualification is designed for those who want to go beyond passion or hands-on practice, and strengthen their technical and professional understanding of beer.
You’ll learn a professional tasting method
You’ll be trained in the Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT) developed by WSET: a universal, structured framework for evaluating beer objectively. It allows you to identify:
- Primary, secondary, and tertiary aromas
- Balance and intensity in a beer
- Common beer faults (oxidation, DMS, diacetyl…)
- Style association and expected quality levels
You’ll develop a global understanding of beer styles and their characteristics
Soon, beer styles will hold no secrets for you!
Of course, the classic Ales and Lagers will be at the core of your learning, but this certification will also take you deeper into amber, red, dark, and stout beers. You’ll explore special styles too, from fruity to sour beers, and immerse yourself in the world of Abbey beers.
You’ll master technical brewing processes
Beyond your usual methods, you’ll explore yeast strains and their aromatic profiles, the impact of different water types (mineral profiles, pH…), advanced fermentation and conditioning techniques. You’ll even dive into topics such as microbiological stability and oxidation management.
You’ll gain the real commercial and marketing vocabulary of beer
Speaking about beer also means communicating effectively—with distributors, retailers, professional clients, and consumers.
The WSET gives you a clear, concise vocabulary shared across the beverage industry (beer, wine, spirits), enabling you to describe, sell, and compare beers without confusion.
