Do you want to become a spirits expert? To master the stages of distillation, aging and finish with precision? This training will allow you to gain a circumstantial understanding of the spirits of the world and develop the tasting skills to accurately assess them.
This advanced level qualification will provide an in-depth theoretical understanding of the techniques used in the production of spirits, from the processing of raw materials to post-distillation operations. Through a combination of tasting and the application of theoretical knowledge, you will be able to explain confidently why spirits look and taste they do, and how and why they differ from each other.

Reception of study materials
Once your registration is finalized, you will receive at the address of your choice the educational materials provided for the preparation of the course (50 hours of personal study recommended before the course starts).
Introductory session – video (4h)
A first introductory session will be held by videoconference. It will allow you to familiarize with the program, the Systematic Approach to Tasting spirits as well as the assessment criterias and expectations for the exam. These elements will help you to organize and plan your preparation efficiently.
Classroom training (5 days – 35h)
Several weeks after the introductory session, participants will meet in the classroom for 5 full days of academic training that will cover the entire program by combining theory information, analytical workshops and tastings (60 spirits). At the end of this training and in addition to the personal preparation carried out upstream, the participant must be ready to take the exam.
The examination (2h30)
The 2h30 exam is broken down into 2 units:
- Unit 1: Theory part (2h)
- Part 1: MCQ of 50 questions
- Part 2: Written questions and answers
- Unit: Practical part (30min) –
- Blind tasting of 2 samples of spirits
Upon registration at a WSET Level 3 Award in spirits qualification, you’ll receive a study pack essential to your preparation.
It contains 2 items:
- The book «Understanding Spirits: explaining style and quality» that covers the whole program. You must read the book before the course starts. This book is also considered as an “essential to spirits knowledge” among the industry
- Tasting sheet « Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits » which will be used during the course
Note that WSET recommends that a student should allocate a minimum 50 hours of private study time. It’s therefore very important that you read the book, make your synthetic notes and you’re confident with the topics which are covered before the course starts. This will ensure a much more dynamic and profitable tuition time and a better group interaction.
